Site category: Chalk sites Sandy Lane Chalk Quarry, Ballingdon A large disused quarry on the Essex/Suffolk border near Sudbury with fine exposures of Upper Chalk, Thanet Sand and Reading Beds. The Chalk/Thanet Sand junction has the characteristic 'bullhead bed' flints. An oil storage depot occupies the floor of the quarry. The quarry is just on the Suffolk side of the Essex border.
